Why Stretching Isn’t Always the Answer

When your body feels tight, what’s the first thing you do?

For most of us, it’s stretching.

While stretching certainly has its place, it’s not always addressing the reason your body feels tight in the first place.

One factor that’s often overlooked is breathing.

Most people think of the diaphragm as the muscle that helps us breathe.

That’s true, but it also contributes to stability through the trunk.

Every breath you take isn’t just moving air. Your diaphragm is also working alongside your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and deep back muscles to help create stability for movement.

Here’s something worth knowing:

Your body will always prioritise breathing over stability.

Breathing is essential for survival. If your diaphragm can’t effectively contribute to stability, your body will find another way to create it.

That often means other muscles stepping in to do more than they were designed to.

These can include your:

  • Hips
  • Adbominals
  • Upper back
  • Intercostals (the muscles between your ribs)

Over time, this can contribute to unnecessary tension and make movement feel more restricted.

Many people associate breathing with the chest rising and falling.

In reality, healthy breathing is much more than that.

Your rib cage is designed to move in three dimensions. As you breathe, it should expand:

  • At the front
  • Through the sides
  • Into the back

When different parts of the rib cage don’t move well, your body may compensate elsewhere.

You don’t need any equipment. Just a chair and a minute of your time.

Sit comfortably and notice what happens as you breathe in each position.

Lean to the left and take a slow breath.
Can you feel your right rib cage expand?

Lean to the right and breathe.
Can you feel your left rib cage expand?

Slump forward and breathe.
Notice whether the back of your rib cage expands.

Sit tall and breathe.
Notice whether you feel more movement through the front of your rib cage.

There isn’t a perfect answer.

The goal is simply to become aware of how your rib cage moves in different positions.

When breathing isn’t functioning as well as it could:

  • The diaphragm becomes less effective at contributing to stability.
  • Stability through the lower back may decrease.
  • Movement can become more restricted.
  • Other muscles around the trunk, pelvis and hips often work harder to compensate, contributing to unnecessary tension.

This doesn’t mean breathing is the only reason someone feels tight.

Strength, movement habits, training load, stress, previous injuries, recovery and daily posture can all play a role.

Breathing is simply one piece of the puzzle that is often overlooked.

When someone tells me they feel tight, my first thought isn’t automatically that they need more stretching.

Instead, I’m curious.

How are they moving?

How strong are they?

How are they recovering?

And how are they breathing?

Looking at the whole picture often provides better answers than focusing on one tight muscle.

Sometimes, your body isn’t asking for another stretch.

It may be asking for a different strategy.

Try the breathing experiment above and pay attention to what you feel.

Did one side of your rib cage move more easily than the other?

Did changing your position change where you felt your breath?
